許多人搞不清楚 because 後面要不要加 of，
也不知道 instead 和 instead of 的用法有何不同，
更分不清 in case、in case of 和 in the case of 到底哪裡不一樣，
今天小編就帶大家一次擊破三大容易搞混的用法！

1. beacuse vs. because of

because
because 是連接詞，我們常用的結構為「because + 主詞 + 動詞」。

 I played this game because my boyfriend recommended it.
我會玩這個遊戲是因為我的男朋友推薦我玩的。

 beacuse of

because of 是介係詞，常用的結構為「because of + 名詞 / 代名詞」。

I fell in love with her because of her kind nature.
我愛上她是因為她本性善良。

I transferred to Taipei because of her.
我為了她轉學到台北。

2. instead vs. instead of

instead

instead 是副詞，有種「作為替代選擇」的感覺。
我們可以把 instead 放在句子的開始或結尾處，不過在英文口語中，放在結尾比較常見。

Flying to Beijing is too expensive. Instead, he is going to take the train.
Flying to Beijing is too expensive so he is going to take the train instead.
搭飛機到北京太貴了，他只好選擇搭火車。

instead of

instead of 是介係詞，意思同樣也是「替代」，不過用法卻不相同。
常用的結構為「instead of + 名詞 / 人名 / 代名詞 / (動詞 + ing)」，記住動詞後面一定要加 ing 喔！

I gave him advice instead of money.
我給了他忠告，而沒有給他錢。

Instead of wasting time, she always studies hard.
她總是用功讀書，而非浪費光陰。

3. in case vs. in case of

in case

in case 是連接詞片語，用來描述「我們要預先做好某些準備，以防萬一」。
常用結構為「in case + 子句」。

Take an umbrella with you in case it rains!
帶把雨傘以防下雨！

We have to look after the children in case they disappear.
我們得照看著孩子們，以免他們不見了。

in case of

in case of 是介係詞片語，用來描述「如果 / 當事情發生時我們該做些什麼」，意思和 in case 差不多。
因為 of 是介係詞，後面通常加名詞或代名詞，常用結構為「 in case of + 名詞 / 代名詞」。

In case of emergency, call the police.
如果發生緊急事件，打給警察。

You can go to the hospital in case of illness.
如果生病了，你可以去醫院。

in the case of 意思是「至於；在…情況下」，在提及另一件事情時可以使用。

In the case of a smart student, getting an A is very easy.

in case 也是以防萬一的意思，後面接子句。

Jane is doing well at school. However, in the case of John, I think we need to consider finding a private tutor.
Jane 在學校表現很好，但至於 John，我認為需要考慮幫他找個家教。

in spite of 儘管

和 despite 一樣，後面都必須接名詞。

Ron went to school yesterday in spite of his illness.
= Ron went to school yesterday despite his illness.
儘管 Ron 生病了，他昨天還是有上學。

若要加上子句，可用 the fact that 連接

Gina failed the exam in spite of the fact that she had studied so hard.
= Gina failed the exam despite the fact that she had studied so hard.
儘管 Gina 非常認真念書，她還是沒有通過這次考試。

有鑑於選舉將至，我們必須在這個議題上達成共識。

in light of 因為；考量到

You should think about their advice in light of your condition.
考量到你的現況，你應該考慮他們的建議。

in place of = in lieu of 取代

這兩個片語都是取代的意思，後面接的是被取代的東西。

Plastics are now often used in place/lieu of wood or metal.
現在較常使用塑膠取代木頭或金屬。

charge 有花費、收費的意思，in charge of 則是負責某事、某機構。

Three months after she joined the company, she is already in charge of a new project.
在加入公司三個月後，她已經開始負責一個新的專案。

當然，你也可以用 “I am in charge!”，強調自己是遊戲或運動中的「老大」！

不過，運動神經超強的人也很可能會在夾娃娃機吃鱉，這部影片會告訴你，夾不到娃娃其實不是技術問題！

in terms of 從…的角度看

term 有術語和任期的意思，in terms of 則指從特定角度看待某事，也可寫成 in … terms

The US Army is internationally condemned in terms of human rights.
美軍在國際間受到人權角度的譴責。

in hopes of 希望，期待

也可以寫成 in the hope of。

This morning Oliver went to the manager’s office in hopes of being able to sign the contract.
今天早上 Oliver 拜訪了經理，希望可以成功簽下合約。

in memory of 紀念

memory 是記憶，in memory of 則是紀念，注意紀念的對象只能是已經「過去」的人事物，如過去的戰爭或是死者。

This monument was built in memory of those who died in the war.
這個紀念碑是為了紀念那些戰死的人們而立。
