维纳斯是从海里升起来的。据说世界之初，统管大地的盖娅女神与统管天空的乌拉诺斯结合生下了一批巨人。后来夫妻反目，盖娅盛怒之下命小儿子克洛诺斯用镰刀割下其父阳具丢入大海。阳具和海融合后生出泡沫，维纳斯就这样诞生了。希腊语中“维纳斯”的意思就是泡沫，而且维纳斯还生下了一对儿女丘比特和依洛丝。

在罗马，维纳斯的纪念日定在每年的四月，帝国时期的罗马对维纳斯的崇拜尤为盛行。凯撒大帝自称埃涅阿斯后裔，尊维纳斯为罗马人祖先。

原Considering that the verb for love in Latin is amare, and nouns in Romantic languages are usually close to their verbs, I really doubt that Venus means "love, sexual desire." It's simply a connotation because Venus and Aphrodite are one in the same.
